Memorial Day Tallahassee: An incredibly humbling moment at Greenwood cemetery

View Comments Dozens gathered at Greenwood Cemetery to honor more than 200 Black military servicemen and women on the morning of Memorial Day. Rep. Al Lawson has spearheaded this effort for three years and has seen a growth in the number of participants with each Memorial Day. Local elected officials including County Commissioners Rick Minor, Carolyn Cummings, and Brian Welch, City Commissioners Diane Williams-Cox and Curtis Richardson, as well as Rep. Allison Tant were in attendance. Members of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club led four teams throughout the cemetery, making sure no gravesites were overlooked. Welch, who is also a world history teacher at Chiles High School, brought his wife and their four children with him and used the time as a learning opportunity for his kids.

COVID: Leon Schools to hold vaccine clinics for students and staff

We certainly realize there are plenty of vaccine sites all over town, said LCS assistant superintendent Alan Cox, who oversees health and wellness at the district. We’re trying to increase the percentage of our employees as well as get 16 and 17-year-olds vaccinated. Cox said the mobile clinic is a partnership with the Florida Department of Health-Leon County and will administer both the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Cox said the mobile unit has the capacity to administer up to 400 doses per day. Currently, the Pfizer vaccine is the only one cleared for 16- and 17-year-olds. Those under 18 will need a parent or guardian present at the time of vaccination. The mobile unit will return to the high school sites for second dose appointments.
