Nantu Paul, the dissident Trinamul leader who had threatened to quit the party on not getting the party ticket from the Siliguri Assembly seat, stuck to his stand despite efforts from his colleagues to make him stay.
Paul, a popular political face in the city, on Tuesday resigned from Trinamul and stepped down from his official posts.
For the past few days, Paul had been vocal about his disappointment over Trinamul’s decision to field Omprakash Mishra from Siliguri.
He repeatedly said that the party should have selected a local leader as the candidate and that he would stand as an Independent from Siliguri.

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will protest the hike in fuel prices on Sunday (March 7) with an all-women road show in Siliguri, West Bengal. She reached the city on Saturday evening and was accompanied by Om Prakash Mishra, the recently announced candidate for the Siliguri Assembly.
At the airport, she addressed the media and informed them that along with her party supporters, she will also be present for the road show at 1 pm. The party supporters will gather at Darjeeling More in Siliguri to protest the hike in fuel rates.

Siliguri (West Bengal) [India], February 27 (ANI): District Election Officer of Darjeeling and District Magistrate Shashank Sethi has increased the polling stations in five Assembly constituencies in the district for the upcoming polls in the view of ongoing pandemic.
In the last polls, there were 1,413 polling stations and now it has been increased to 1,719. There are 12,22,190 voters in the district.
Darjeeling will go for the polling in the fifth phase on April 17. Two companies of the central armed police forces will be arriving in the district, officials said.
