Community leader Pat Tinto has been named president of the National Organization of Italian American Women (NOIAW), after three years spent helming that group’s Connecticut Region. A member of Norwalk’s Democratic Town Committee, she is the founder and chief executive of innovative public relations firm Pat Tinto Communications, whose many clients have included local political campaigns and Stamford-based Women’s Business Development Council. She leads the ongoing “CaffeÌ and Conversazione” group at the Norwalk Library, and Vini, Vitti, Dici, an Italian conversation group/cultural salon.

NPD enforcement underway
“If you text and drive, you will pay,” said Norwalk Police Department (NPD) Sgt. Sofia Gulino in a press release announcing an impending Norwalk crackdown on distracted drivers. “Starting April 1st, our Norwalk community will see a highly visible and increased enforcement presence on our roadways. Our focus is on safety. Our officers will be stopping and ticketing any drivers who text while driving and endanger the public.”

Good news for Glover Avenue’s 4,000+ residents and Merritt 7 Metro North Station users: The Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) will link to Glover via a new 1000-foot spur trail under construction this spring, eliminating hikers’ need to cross a busy four lane road, according to a press release.

The project is supported by a new $100,000 grant allocated through Fairfield County Community Foundation (FCCF)’s Donor Advised Fund program, said to oversee all administrative aspects of philanthropy.

Tax sale moved back, again
The tax sale, delayed due to COVID-19, is scheduled for Aug. 16, Tax Collector Lisa Biagiarelli has told Common Council members last week. She had planned it for July but feels “we need more time” because the grace period on property tax bills is keeping her staff busy.
Taxpayers have until April 1 to pay their taxes.
“We have to wait really until after April 1 to do a lot of things that we normally would already be doing right now,” she said.
Midwifery
The Doctorate of Nurse Midwifery Program at Fairfield University’s Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies has received a five-year accreditation through the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), according to a press release. The program, which had been pre-accredited by ACME since its 2017 inception, offers faculty-supervised clinical experience in attending births and providing primary, gynecologic, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and breastfeeding care.
Noting the program’s focus on perinatal palliative care and trauma-informed care, Program Director Jenna LoGiudice, PhD, CNM, RN. pointed to the 2020 graduating class’s 100% certification rate. “The accreditation from ACME recognizes the work of our faculty and students alike in promoting excellence in the midwifery profession,” she said.
