PH, UN Launch First-ever National Joint Programme For Human Rights Following Human Rights Council Resolution 45/33

SHARES MANILA The Government of the Philippines and the United Nations (UN) signed today the first-ever national-level UN joint programme on human rights. The three-year UN joint programme was developed to implement Human Rights Council (HRC) resolution 45/33, adopted on 7 October 2020, which outlined specific areas for capacity-building and technical cooperation for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines. Through the joint programme, the UN in the Philippines will engage in capacity-building and technical cooperation in six areas, namely, strengthening domestic investigation and accountability mechanisms; data gathering on alleged police violations; civic space and engagement with civil society and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR); national mechanism for reporting and follow-up; counter-terrorism legislation; and human rights-based approaches to drug control.

RTC acquits 2 Aetas of terrorism charges

Published July 19, 2021, 2:23 PM Regional Trial Court (RTC) Two Aeta tribesmen who were arrested in Aug. 2020 by the military have been acquitted by the Olongapo City regional trial court (RTC) of illegal possession of firearms and explosives, and violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 2020. RTC Judge Melani Fay V. Tadili granted the demurrer to evidence filed by Japer T. Gurong and Junior U. Ramos in an order issued last July 15. “WHEREFORE, the Demurrer to Evidence is GRANTED. These cases are ordered DISMISSED on the ground of insufficiency of evidence,” Judge Tadili ruled. A demurrer to evidence is filed by an accused in a criminal case to dismiss the charges on allegation of weakness of the evidence presented by the prosecution.

Davao targets to vaccinate at least 1,000 jail personnel, inmates

Published July 19, 2021, 1:33 PM DAVAO CITY – The City Health Office (CHO) has started the inoculation of persons deprived of liberty (PDL) and jail personnel at the Davao City Jail (DCJ) last week. According to Dr. Michelle Schlosser, spokesperson of the COVID-19 Task Force, the CHO is targeting to vaccinate 1,000 jail personnel and inmates as part of the government’s action to achieve herd immunity. Data from the Davao City Vaccination Cluster shows that as of July 16, a total of 555 priority individuals, including senior citizens and persons with comorbidities were inoculated. In a statement from the City Information Office, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Davao’s Community Relations Service and Inmates Welfare and Development chief Captain Ellen Rose Garcia said that “of the 555 vaccinated individuals, 489 were PDLs from DCJ-annex and 66 are BJMP personnel.”

Uniformed personnel to get full COVID-19 jabs by August- Año

Published July 13, 2021, 10:32 AM Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año said on Monday night, July 12, that all uniformed personnel specifically the personnel from the the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will be fully- vaccinated by next August this year. Año issued the statement after getting assurance from vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez that uniformed personnel will be prioritized. At present, Año disclosed that 50,567 PNP personnel got their first vaccine dose while 15,423 are fully vaccinated.
