“Solitary confinement doesn’t exist in reality, and by definition, it doesn’t exist in this state or any state in the country,” Powers said. “When you’re dealing with individuals that don’t subscribe or get along in the rehabilitation system, it’s not different than society.”
The new law will also, among other things, ban the use of solitary confinement for pregnant individuals, those living with certain disabilities, and anyone under the age of 22 and older than 54.
Chris Moreau, NYSCOPBA’s vice president for the Mid-Hudson region, said they’re particularly concerned about the law’s ban on solitary confinement for ages 18 to 21.

The inmate, who is serving a 16-year manslaughter sentence, reportedly attacked the CO in the recreation yard shortly after 8 p.m., the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association said. Another CO saw his co-worker drop to the ground in the north yard after the alleged assault, the union continued. The CO was unconscious by the time staff arrived and was brought to the medical facilities in the prison before being transported to a local hospital, NYSCOPBA said.

from law enforcement officials about a new law that just passed that restricts
the amount of time an inmate can spend in segregated confinement.
