Gully-washer, frog-strangler, duck-drencher. Call it what you will, but the Coastal Bend has struggled with localized flooding for years, especially when the cloudbursts dump inches of water on a concentrated location.
A storm on April 23, 1956, was one such time. Parts of Corpus Christi received 8 inches of rain, Portland received 9.25 inches, Taft 11.5 inches and outer areas of San Patricio County recorded 14 inches. Downtown Corpus Christi received so much rainfall that the flood control pumping system became overwhelmed, pumping water at the rate of 1,125,000 gallons a minute. Stores along Chaparral Street reported 4 to 6 inches of standing water inside their buildings.
It will be reopened June 26.
Motorists heading south on Port Avenue will be detoured onto Martin Luther King Drive and follow the detour signs to Nueces Bay Boulevard and Leopard Street.
Drivers heading north on Port Avenue will be detoured onto Leopard Street and follow the signs to Nueces Bay Boulevard and Antelope Street.
Portable message signs will help motorists navigate the alternate routes. Business driveways along the closed section of Port Avenue will be granted access for customers and employees.
Motorists are urged to be aware of the closure, consider using alternate routes, follow all traffic control devices, and to slow down in the work zones. All work is weather permitting.
Call it the calm before the rest of the storm.
High winds and rain that got heavy at times pounded much of the Corpus Christi area late Monday and early Tuesday.
Although things appeared to have calmed down by midday Tuesday, weather officials warned the storms aren t over yet.
Parts of Corpus Christi received up to an inch of rain in some areas Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi.
Flooding was a concern in low-lying areas.
There were several reports of strong winds, especially in Jim Wells and Duval counties. Weather reports documented calls about damaged roofs and downed power lines in Alice and near Benavides. The Automated Weather Observation System reported severe wind gusts up to 70 mph early Monday morning.
