Obituary: Monte Hellman, cult director whose only studio film was hailed as an existential masterpiece

Died: April 20, 2021. MONTE Hellman, who has died aged 91, was a film director who became the ultimate outsider. One of a generation of auteurs to have come of artistic age on the back of the post-Second World War US counterculture, his work was equally in tune with European philosophical sensibilities. The fusion of the two made for a brooding and ennui-laden canon that chimed with the times. This was seen best in Two-Lane Blacktop, (1971), an existential road movie starring singer-songwriter James Taylor and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson alongside Laurie Bird and semi-regular Hellman collaborator, Warren Oates. The British film critic, Philip French, later described it as an “existential masterpiece”.

It is possible that Hellman, who has died aged 91, gained cult status because of his reputation as a maverick, like his favourite actors Jack Nicholson and Warren Oates, and because his films were so few and far between. After Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), his most accomplished and celebrated movie, Hellman had only five full-length features credited to him. Nevertheless, he was not idle for all that time. He taught film-making at the California Institute of the Arts, and worked on various projects for other people, some uncredited. For example, Hellman finished two pictures in post-production, the Muhammed Ali biopic The Greatest (1977) and Avalanche Express (1979), after the deaths of their directors, Tom Gries and Mark Robson respectively.

His daughter Melissa, who produced his 2010 film Road to Nowhere, confirmed the news to the Hollywood Reporter, saying Hellman had died in hospital after a fall at his home. Hellman was born Monte Himmelman in 1929, and after studying theatre at Stanford University set up a theatre company in Los Angeles. Like many directors of his generation, Hellman gained early experience working for Roger Corman’s low-budget exploitation-movie factory.
