WBAL NewsRadio is a long-standing supporter of Special Olympics Maryland and this year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Polar Bear Plunge. Even though we can t gather and run into the frigid waters of the Chesapeake together, we are still keeping the tradition strong and plunging from home! We are asking that you join us in the first-ever Virtual Plunge! We encourage you to get creative and have fun! Fill your bathtub with ice water, fill up a kiddie pool with cold water and take a dip or have a family member spray you down with a hose! Then, capture your plunge, share it with the world using #PlungeMD and help raise funds for the 8,617 athletes across the state.

Virtual MOVEment brings Special Olympics Maryland athletes together

The Polar Bear Plunge is virtual this year, but it s not just the plunge athletes at home are creating and hosting many of their own social sessions to stay connected. The sessions are made up of virtual air-high-fives and Zoom class jumping jack exercises. Athletes and plungers are getting their feet wet with all sorts of activities through Virtual MOVEment. Special Olympics Maryland athletes like David Godoy, of Montgomery County, are thriving in those modified ways, taking charge and leading their own sessions, like exercise, and other programs, like this WWE social club and what s called quarantine cuisine. I m being able to do it in a modified way, Godoy said. We re still able to get engaged with other athletes. We re able to get engaged with the staff and personnel. We re able to get engaged with the volunteers. The inclusive experiences are designed for all 8,700 athletes. January 17, 2021 Many will look back at the year 2020 and wish to forget it, and for good reasons. While we remember the many difficulties and challenges, we come away from the past year grateful and humbled. Amidst a global pandemic and continually changing public directives and orders, the men and women of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office were able to continue operations to provide services to the citizens of Charles County. Our officers on the front lines responded to calls and were recognized for meritorious service and lifesaving work. Most importantly, our community came together, on many occasions, to show support for one another. Here is a positive look back at 2020:
