At one gig, Tom was spotted by Gordon Mills, a London-based manager who immediately became Tom’s manager and took him to London, changing his name from Tom Woodward to Tom Jones.
Tom’s first single, ‘Chills and Fever’, was released in 1964, and although it did not reach the charts, his second single did.
‘It’s Not Unusual’ became an international hit and hurtled Tom into the spotlight.
After the song reached number one in the UK’s single charts, Tom recorded theme tune songs for the film What’s New Pussycat? and the James Bond film Thunderball.
In 1965, Tom met Elvis for the first time in Hollywood, and the following year the singer received a Grammy award for Best New Artist.
