Plants have evolved unique immunity mechanisms that they can activate upon detecting the presence of a pathogen. Interestingly, the presence of some nonpathogenic microorganisms can also prompt a plant to activate its systemic immunity mechanisms, and some studies have shown that pretreating agricultural crops with such immunity-activating nonpathogenic microorganisms can leave the crops better prepared to fight off infections from pathogenic microorganisms. LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State University’s chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society, took home a number of awards at their virtual 2021 national conference. The conference was presented virtually from April 16-17 because of the pandemic.
NMSU’s Alpha Phi Sigma chapter placed among the best in group competitions including Star Chapter Award, Outstanding Leadership, Theme of the Year – Cybercrime, the Chapter T-Shirt Competition and website.
Since the conference was virtual, 700-plus Alpha Phi Sigma members – more than double the usual number – participated in the event from across the U.S. and Canada. With more members vying for the top awards, competition was intense, particularly for member of the year.

Brendan van Wyk, Treatment Project Manager
XYLEM Africa, a subsidiary of Xylem LLC, congratulate Brendan van Wyk, its Treatment Project Manager, for receiving the Best Paper Award at the 2020 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference.
His winning paper, “Use of Ozone for Cooling Towers,” was presented at the US-based conference by colleague Alexis Métais, where it sufficiently impressed the PEERS technical committee to award it best of the show, beating over 75 papers presented during the conference’s 3-day period.
“I am very honoured to be able to receive such an award, and have to thank Harald Staple and Alexis Metais for their assistance in receiving this,” said Van Wyk.
