Syracuse in the WNBA: Tiana Mangakahia waived by Phoenix Mercury

Former Syracuse Orange women’s basketball player Tiana Mangakahia was cut from the Phoenix Mercury training camp roster on Wednesday, according to reports.
It would appear the Chicago Sky have waived Brittany Boyd-Jones and the Phoenix Mercury have waived Sara Blicavs, Ciera Johnson, and Tiana Mangakahia. Kurtis (@fromkurtis) May 12, 2021
Mangakahia went undrafted this spring, but signed a training camp contract with fellow Australian Sandy Brondello and the Phoenix Mercury shortly after the draft. The WNBA has just 144 total available roster spots, with each team having at most 12 players. Every player in training camp has to compete for a spot on the team and unfortunately Mangakahia did not make the cut this year.
One Big Question Heading Into 2021
How good can this “Big 3” be? When Griner exited the single-site after just one game, she had been the Mercury’s leading scorer and rebounder. Taurasi, now 39, led the team in scoring with just over 18 PPG, as her and Diggins-Smith tag-teamed the load of taking this team as far as it could go. But with Griner back in the mix, alongside other pieces like Brianna Turner contributing, what’s the ceiling for this group? Phoenix can be as good as its “Big 3” deems.
WNBA Draft Ranking
Following the 2021 WNBA Draft, Michelle Smith ranked every team’s draft decisions. She rated Phoenix 11th out of the 12 WNBA teams.
As the countdown to Thursday s 2021 WNBA draft (7 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN App) continues, the biggest question isn t focused on which player might be selected first. Texas junior Charli Collier remains the projected No. 1 pick.
But with the Wings trading the No. 7 pick to the Los Angeles Sparks before Wednesday s draft trade deadline, now we wonder: Which player are the Sparks targeting for that pick? Dallas still holds four of the first 13 selections, but now the Sparks have two in the first round.
Could Los Angeles be after a local college star in UCLA s Michaela Onyenwere? If point guards Aari McDonald and Dana Evans go in the top six, and Onyenwere is still available, she could be the Sparks choice at No. 7. Los Angeles coach/general manager Derek Fisher said he wants playmakers and versatile defenders. Players such as Onyenwere and DiJonai Carrington also could fit that bill.
