When I was a young boy, as both a fan of anime and cinema, it was always a dream of mine to see Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon movies in theaters! Seeing cinematic adaptations on the big screen (the way they were meant to be seen) is always something I loved doing when given an opportunity, and I figured if “The Rugrats Movie” looked great on the silver screen then certainly the anime I watched on Toonami would look great as well! Thanks to Funimation’s recent big-screen efforts we have gotten several DBZ movies in theaters here in America (and even on IMAX once)! Sailor Moon Crystal, the second attempt at an anime adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi’s
Sailor Moon manga, met mixed reactions from fans. It was a more faithful adaptation of the manga series than the beloved ’90s anime adaptation, but its central characters, the guardians of Earth (also known as the Sailor Senshi), looked off. Sailor Pluto suddenly had lighter skin. The CGI transformations where the characters change into their superpowered forms felt outdated. And the muted tones lacked the bright, colorful prettiness fans remembered from the ’90s.
