‘Baby Mamas’ shower mothers

People organize baby showers for their friends who are first-time or expecting mothers. The occasion is used to ‘shower them with gifts to bless the newborn’.
Such was the intention of a group calling themselves Baby Mamas”, when they organized two bumper baby showers at the Sunset Shores Hotel on Monday, 17th May. This time, though, these mothers were different.
All fifty ladies were residing in emergency shelters, having been displaced by the explosive eruption of the La Soufriere volcano.
Spearheading the activity was Mrs. LaToya DeRoche-John who told THE VINCENTIAN that the idea for the event morphed after she visited with a shelteree”- Mary Ann Nero.
Though some persons seem to have reverted to pre-COVID behaviour, regarding masks and physical distancing guidelines, local authorities are reminding citizens that there has been no relaxation of COVID19 related protocols in St Vincent and the Grenadines. As at May 12, just over 2000 people were recorded as being fully vaccinated against COVID19 in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Official figures from the Ministry of Health this week showed a total of 2529 receiving their two doses of either the AstraZeneca or Sputnik V vaccine.
However, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Simone Keizer-Beache told SEARCHLIGHT that there has been a slow uptake in persons coming forward to be vaccinated in recent weeks.
Health authorities had a soft launch of the local vaccination programme in February before ramping up one month later.
Governments across the globe have been racing to vaccinate the majority of their population against the coronavirus so as to achieve herd immunity and return to some level of normalcy.
