Photos taken Tuesday show an area near the volcano almost unrecognizable from just two weeks earlier The lush green land is now destroyed by fallen ash, with the roofs of homes covered in a thick layer of dust La Soufrière erupted Friday for the first time in 40 years, with continuous explosions over the following days Eruptions are expected to continue for weeks with the UN warning of a growing humanitarian crisis Around 20,000 people have so far been evacuated from the most dangerous red zone Fears are mounting about the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak as 4,500 residents pack in emergency shelters

Heavy ashfall from La Soufrière has contaminated many communities’ water supplies, leaving people to congregate in long queues at standpipes. Among those queueing was Suzanne Thomas, 46, a saleswoman from South Union, who said she was hosting nine evacuees in her home who were huddled together, sleeping on rugs and blankets. “It’s really rough. We have to use one jug of water to shower, brush our teeth and flush the toilet,” she said Kevin Sam, 17, said he had had no water at all since Saturday. “I’m glad these standpipes are available, because I don’t know what we would’ve done. It’s not easy to bathe with half a bucket.”
