From champagne to gold-flecked smoked salmon and even posh New Year’s Eve takeaways, Britons in lockdown are popping more premium corks and splashing out on luxury food treats to help them see out a miserable year in style.
Figures show that many shoppers have traded up to premium fizz – spending nearly a quarter more in the last three months than the same time last year – to tide them over Christmas and celebrate the new year.

It s a traditional offering to Santa on Christmas Eve: a glass of sherry, usually accompanied by a mince pie.
But this year, it s not just everyone s favourite red-suited gift-giver who ll be partial to the venerable Spanish aperitif.
After years of unfashionability, sherry has made a comeback, with sales up 17.6% in the 12 weeks to 5 December, says market research firm Nielsen.
Retailers are reporting increased demand from young and old alike.
For instance, the Co-op says it has sold an extra 44,000 litres of sherry this year, and with sales up 70% on last year.
Simon Cairns, head of drinks at the Co-op, said: It s great to see that consumers are experimenting with their drinks and that sherry has made a comeback.

Sales of sherry in the UK have soared during lockdown and could smash all records over Christmas, thanks to its appeal to a new generation for its versatility – as an early evening “snifter” or a base for homemade cocktails.
Retailers are predicting “the biggest year ever” for sherry this festive season, after a long-term decline in sales was reversed as a result of families trying out different drinks while unable to visit pubs, bars and restaurants.
The market research company Nielsen said sales of sherry leaped by more than 20% in March – when hospitality venues were first forced to close – with sustained growth propelling the UK to become the biggest world market and overtaking Spain, the traditional home of the fortified wine.
