Eating fish has been a practice for Christians for centuries, particularly during Lent.
The connection of eating fish and Lent arose as early as the third century, when worshippers needed a dietary substitute for agreeing to abstain from popular foods, such as meat, during the 40-day Lenten period held to remember the 40 days that Christians say Jesus spent fasting in the desert. The last week of Lent includes three major religious observances for Christians: Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Catholics and Anglicans have a tradition of giving up meat on Fridays throughout the year, hence the practice of eating fish, instead. This restriction is meant to honor the sacrifice of Jesus, who died on the cross on a Friday, by performing a penance, such as abstaining from the eating of warm-blooded animals.
