KARACHI: An antiterrorism court granted on Friday bail to 147 leaders and activists of nationalist parties arrested in cases pertaining to allegedly resorting to violence, ransacking and torching private properties in Bahria Town Karachi (BTK) during their protest against the mega housing project.
Police booked leaders and activists of several nationalist parties under the umbrella of Sindh Action Committee for allegedly torching restaurants, shops, vehicles and looting money from ATMs during their protest on the Superhighway on June 6. On Friday, the suspects moved applications seeking grant of post-arrest bail.
The applicants, who were on judicial remand in prison, had filed applications through Advocates Naeem Qureshi, Peer Asadullah Shah Rashidi and Asghar Narejo.

Murad Baksh is facing terrorism charges for vandalizing Bahria Town Karachi property – even though he wasn’t present at the protest site when violence erupted on June 6.
“I was unwell that day and had gone to the doctor’s. Regardless of my absence [on June 6], a First Investigation Report (FIR) was launched against me. I got interim bail and despite that the police raided my house and picked [up] two of my cousins,” recounted a frustrated Baksh.

Karachi On June 6, the Sindh Action Committee organized a protest and sit-in to draw attention to the systematic and continuous violence that Bahria Town Karachi (BTK) inflicted on Indigenous peoples. Dawn reports that up to 10,000 protesters demonstrated outside of BTK’s main entrance gate, condemning the real estate corporation for robbing Indigenous peoples of their ancestral land and forcing them out of their homes. (Dawn, Jun. 21) As the action progressed, chaos ensued within Bahria Town’s master-planned community. BTK’s entrance gate was set on fire, prompting police to unleash terror against the protesters.
