Norwich Free Academy and New London High School have long-standing rivalries on athletic fields, and now the two schools will be competing in a different competition with 14 other school districts, and the prize is $10,000 for one winning district.
Concerned that 16% fewer high school seniors completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid during the COVID-19-upended 2019-20 school year, Gov. Ned Lamont in December announced a competition for school districts to boost the number of seniors who complete FAFSA applications.
FAFSA forms are sent to any colleges that students apply to and help in determining financial aid packages.
The competition was open to the 21 school districts in which fewer than 50% of seniors completed the FAFSA forms last year. Sixteen applied for the competition, and the state accepted all of them, said Chris Soto, director of innovations and partnerships for the state Department of Education. New London Regina Mosley had an involuntary response when she first noticed the racial slur scrawled on the side of an envelope that had been delivered to her front step.
“I got a knot in my stomach and felt like I wanted to throw up,” she said.
She then tried to rationalize it.
“Is this some kind of joke? No. This is really not funny. This is hateful,” she said.
The package contained background material for the upcoming Board of Education meeting and was left at her New London home by a courier. It seemed to have been moved from where it is usually left. She’d already paged through the materials when she first noticed the message in black marker, “Die, (N-word) Die,” written on the envelope.
IHC accepts Cynthia, Malik’s settlement pleas

ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday accepted pleas from Senator Rehman Malik and US blogger Cynthia Dawn Ritchie for the withdrawal of cases against each other.
The pleas were heard by Justice Aamir Farooq of the IHC.
During the hearing, Cynthia’s counsel Imran Feroz Malik adopted the stance that his client had directed him to withdraw the case against Malik.
Malik’s counsel also pleaded the court to retract the application against Cynthia, which the court accepted.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday accepted US blogger Cynthia Ritchie s request to withdraw a petition seeking the registration of a criminal case against Senator Rehman Malik for allegedly raping her in 2011.
Accepting the request, Justice Amir Farooq dismissed Ritchie s petition while the former interior minister also withdrew his petition for registration of a defamation case against the US blogger.
Ritchie s lawyer Imran Feroze Malik, speaking to
Dawn.com, said the petition had been withdrawn on the request of Ritchie herself. Today we have withdrawn all the petitions based on multiple requests.
