PEDC lukewarm on Inlet Island development proposal

ITHACA, NY Ithaca’s Planning and Economic Development Committee got its first chance to discuss the proposal for Inlet Island after the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency chose Finger Lakes Development as the preferred proposal. Finger Lakes Development, led by developer Steve Flash, proposed two separate buildings, one with 50-56 affordable housing units serving a range of 30-120% of area median income ($18,000-$72,000), and one with 78-90 units for extended stays, called a “hometel.”  Reviews were generally mixed from committee members, with most liking some aspects while not liking others. Committee Chair Seph Murtagh said he likes that Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS) is involved, and he likes that the affordable housing ensures equitable waterfront development. However, in addition to the evergreen concerns of parking, he said he was also concerned with the lack of active ground floor uses in the proposal.

The Cliff Street Retreat proposal is a bad fit for West Hill

As a long-time Cliff Street resident, and as an urban planner with over three decades of experience, domestic and international, I once again find my neighborhood under assault from Ithaca’s City Hall. Surprisingly, the assault is being led by none other than our West Hill alderwoman, Cynthia Brock, with the hearty support of alderman George McGonigal. The so-called “Cliff Street Retreat” development being proposed for the Incodema property at 407 Cliff Street has already passed Brock’s Planning and Economic Development Committee, and has received Conceptual Approval, with their votes, from Common Council. Although described by Cynthia Brock and the developer as an “innovative” mixed-use residential and commercial project, the rezoning will in fact introduce large-scale residential development into the middle of the Cliff Street neighborhood: a 23,300 square foot commercial development the size of the building housing Chipotle and Firehouse Subs on Mead

Democratic primary results are official

County Legislature (District 1) Travis Brooks is in the running to replace outgoing chair Leslyn McBean-Clairborne, who decided not to run again after spending 20 years as the legislator. Brooks defeated Nicole LaFave by 34 votes, 396-362. Brooks won the first ward 181 votes to LaFave’s 105, while LaFave was favored in the second ward, 257 votes to Brooks’ 215. Brooks is the deputy director of the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, where he manages programs focused on education, development and sustainability. He’s also the director of Ithaca’s My Brother’s Keeper, a program launched by President Barack Obama designed to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. He was also heavily involved in the Reimagining Public Safety collaborative between the city and the county, and will continue to serve on the newly created task force to work on the implementation of the plan.
