TOPEKA Gov. Laura Kelly moved to place a larger imprint Wednesday on the Kansas Board of Regents by naming a retired railroad executive, a prominent educator and a former Republican legislator to the state’s higher education governance board.
The latest nominees combined with three members appointed during 2019 provide the Democratic governor with a majority on the nine-member board. State law requires selections to undergo Senate confirmation. No political party can have more than five members on the bipartisan board, which has direct responsibility for six public universities and oversight of a network of community and technical colleges as well as Washburn University.

Police: Threat to burn Middletown condo prompts SWAT team response

MIDDLETOWN Police deployed a SWAT team and crisis negotiators after two men threatened to burn down a condo at Quail Run Village on Thursday.
The incident began shortly before noon when Middletown police were called to assist mobile crisis personnel at an address on Cynthia Lane, police spokesman Lt. Brian Hubbs said. Police closed traffic the apartment complex as the situation unfolded.
The mobile crisis team told police they were trying “evaluate two males who have a history of aggression” Hubbs said.
Residents were evacuated about an hour later, after the two men “threatened to burn down the condominium” he said.

No injuries were reported and the situation was resolved peacefully after emergency crews were called in to negotiate with two men who barricaded themselves inside a condominium and threatened to burn down the building in Middletown Thursday, according to police.
According to police, officers first responded to Cynthia Lane just before noon when Mobile Crisis personnel called to report difficulties evaluating two males with a history of aggression. Mobile crisis units are designed to respond to and assess potential mental health emergencies and are staffed by mental health workers.
