Sturgis Historical Museum to reopen this weekend
On June 4, Sturgis Historical Museum At The Depot will reopen.
It marks the first time the museum has kept regular hours since the conclusion of the 2019 season. In 2020, the pandemic limited community access.
Because so many people missed the featured attractions created for 2020, those remain on display, said Jenifer Blouin Policelli, director.
Displays include an expanded Civil War exhibit; one honoring women’s rights; and Johnston Skate-O-Rama/Blue Plaza Skating Rink.
In the works, and with the help of the community, organizers are working on an exhibit of Sturgis Drive-In, according to Blouin Policelli. Residents are invited to look at history and leave behind some of their own memories.
Sturgis Journal
Sturgis might be considered a quiet, small Michigan city, but throughout history, residents have made a splash in the news.
A few nearly splashed into one of The Great Lakes, according to Wayne Lusardi, maritime archaeologist at Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Earlier this year, Allen Kasdorf of Sturgis saw a tribute to Tuskegee Airmen presented and created by Lusardi and DNR.
In it, Lusardi mentioned the Hapner brothers of Sturgis, balloonists who crashed a hot- air balloon into Lake Huron in 1892.
That piqued Kasdorf’s interest, so he sent the link to the Sturgis Journal. From there, a triangle of information bounced among the Journal, Lusardi and Jenifer Blouin Policelli, director at Sturgis Historical Museum.
