The shallow pools are crafted from highly polished granite and will frame and reflect the neo-classical façade of the art gallery. The original low stone heritage walls in the forecourt will be reconstructed and raised to provide extra seating.

Work on the Sydney Modern Project, representing the expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, is in full flow, and on track for completion next year.
Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of Japanese architecture firm SANAA, Sydney Modern Project will almost double the current building’s exhibition space to enable the gallery to showcase their outstanding art collection as well as attract major national and international exhibitions to Sydney, thereby, delivering a range of cultural, educational and economic benefits to the city.
The $344-million transformation project involves the construction of a new building to the north of the existing gallery, with the standalone building connected to the gallery through an outdoor public art garden, and all three spaces coming together to form an expanded art museum. .-The Art Gallery of New South Wales kicked off its 150th anniversary celebrations with a burst of color and light, collaborating for the first time with the Sydney Opera House to mark the annual Badu Gili festival of First Nations Culture by projecting artworks onto the iconic sails of the Opera House.
The work of six leading Aboriginal women artists represented in the Art Gallerys permanent collection will light up each evening in a six-minute animation on the sails, as the Gallery leads up to the completion in 2022 of its Sydney Modern expansion project, designed by SANAA.
