DEAL – A brewing war over beachfront parking has been averted at least for now.
A plan to make several streets permit-only parking available to residents was tabled Wednesday by the borough s three commissioners.
The ordinance would have required parking permits from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday on five streets in the southern end of town: Monmouth Terrace, Monmouth Drive, Hathaway Avenue, Sydney Avenue and Neptune Avenue.
The plan was to issue permits only to people who live on those streets.
The borough received pushback on the measure from public access advocates, including the Surfrider Foundation, and state legislators, who saw the measure as blocking public access.

The estate of a man shot in the head and mortally wounded by a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy after a high-speed chase that ended near Port Orchard is suing, alleging the deputy used excessive force.
Brent Lee Heath, 35, died on Oct. 3, 2018, a year after Deputy Carl M. Shanks shot him at the conclusion of a 12-mile police chase that started on the Key Peninsula in Pierce County on Sept. 21, 2017.
Heath’s death had not been previously reported.
An investigation by the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team, led by Bremerton police, found the Acura that Heath was driving, which was stopped and had been surrounded by police near Olney Avenue SE and Beach Drive, had been disabled by spike strips.
