Suit alleges Pierce County deputy s fatal shooting of man near Port Orchard used excessive force

The estate of a man shot in the head and mortally wounded by a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy after a high-speed chase that ended near Port Orchard is suing, alleging the deputy used excessive force. Brent Lee Heath, 35, died on Oct. 3, 2018, a year after Deputy Carl M. Shanks shot him at the conclusion of a 12-mile police chase that started on the Key Peninsula in Pierce County on Sept. 21, 2017. Heath’s death had not been previously reported. An investigation by the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team, led by Bremerton police, found the Acura that Heath was driving, which was stopped and had been surrounded by police near Olney Avenue SE and Beach Drive, had been disabled by spike strips.
