Spotlight: Limerick’s fine art tradition

Limerick has had famous artists in the past. So, before we come to consider Michael Collins (Miceál Ó Coileáin) let’s look at who came before him and in so doing see where Ó Coileáin fits in that continuum. Michael lives and works in both Limerick and Barcelona. I spoke to him on the phone recently in Barcelona and I’m delighted to report that it was raining there and sunny here in Limerick!
Timothy Collopy
Timothy Collopy was born in Limerick in the mid-eighteenth century. His first trade was as a baker’s apprentice. His talent for art was noticed from a young age and he was sent to Rome to study. He was mostly known as a religious painter though he also worked as a portrait painter and restorer. Following his death in London in 1811 some of his works were auctioned in Christies Auction Rooms. One of his paintings, ‘The Ascension,’ can be viewed in the Augustinian Church on O’Connell

Limerick taxi drivers say moving O Connell Street rank will affect business

A LIMERICK taxi driver contacted the Leader to say he - and a number of colleagues - were not aware that the O Connell Street rank was being moved.
He said there were bollards blocking it when he went to pull into the rank on Thursday. He said the taxi signs have been taken down and no new ones erected to inform the public where the replacement rank is.
The Leader put his claims to Limerick City and County Council. A spokesperson said they carried out and continue to undertake an extensive engagement and awareness process in relation to the works now underway on O’Connell Street .
A man s head was stomped on in a violent altercation on the streets of Melbourne.
Police were called to the fight on Cecil Street in South Melbourne after a group had been kicked out of a York Street pub about 2.20am on Saturday.
Confronting footage shows up to 10 involved in the melee, with one man s head stomped on and another kicked a punched while on the ground.
