Contentious discussion ends with New Hampton tabling ambulance ‘seed money’

The New Hampton City Council once again tabled paying its share of “seed money” to the Chickasaw County Ambulance Council.
The unanimous vote came after a lengthy and, at times, contentious discussion during a meeting last Monday evening that was marked by several heated exchanges and city officials expressing frustration with county officials, especially Supervisor Jake Hackman.
But Monday’s vote to table paying the Ambulance Council $7,295.70 New Hampton’s share of the $25,000 seed money the new council was supposed to use to generate requests for proposals (RFPs) by hiring an attorney or consultant raises a number of questions.

The new Chickasaw County Ambulance Council moved closer to reaching an agreement with the Chickasaw Ambulance Service during a lengthy meeting Tuesday, just one day after a number of city councils, including Nashua’s, rejected a proposal made by the service.
The two sides compromised on a number of issues, including the cost of the contract, during Tuesday night’s meeting and came up with a two-year contract that will pay the service $217,500 in the fiscal year beginning on July 1 and $228,402 in the second year of the contract.

The Chickasaw County Ambulance Council will have one less member midway through next year, thanks to a split vote by the Board of Supervisors on Monday.
Board members voted 3-2 to terminate its membership in the council that was formed in 1989 and to give the required 180 days notice after a relatively long discussion that grew contentious at times.
Board Chairman Jacob Hackman was joined by Tim Zoll and David Tilkes while Supervisors Jason Byrne and Steve Geerts, who serves as the chair of the Ambulance Council, voted against the motion.
