In 1959, Maestri claimed to have made the first ascent of the 10,262 ft Cerro Torre in the mountains of southern Patagonia over six days via a route up its fiercely forbidding granite east wall. In Italy he was hailed a hero, and the climb was called the “greatest climbing feat of all time” by his peers.
