I Love to Move enters fourth year

Article content Now in its fourth year, the I Love to Move program has provided free recreational activities to more than 200 local youth. Created and run by the Centre for Social Justice and Good Works, I Love to Move addresses an identified need in the community. “A study conducted by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre in 2015 suggested that some of the children in Sault Ste. Marie were in the worst health in the province of Ontario,” Shreya Mathur, executive director of the CSJGW, told Sault This Week. “Obesity and inactivity were on a rise and there was a strong need in the community for affordable recreational activities for children.”

Sault Symphony brings music to the ears of LTC seniors

Article content A recently launched program by Sault Symphony Orchestra helps to ease the effects of isolation among local seniors in long-term-care homes. The SSO’s new Seniors Connect program sees Symphony musicians meet virtually with residents in long term care. The calls allow the musician to demonstrate their instrument, answer any questions the senior has, and chat about the senior’s experiences and memories around music. “We know that a lot of seniors are really feeling the effects of prolonged isolation due to the pandemic,” Louis St. Pierre, SSO board chair, told Sault This Week. “When we learned about a similar program at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, we immediately started looking for a way to launch our own.”
