JOHNSTOWN The Fulton County Board of Supervisors recently authorized Sheriff Richard Giardino to commence the process for state accreditation of his department’s Road Patrol Division.
The sheriff’s office division would be accredited through the state Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Giardino has requested to commence the application for accreditation, which stems from the newly-adopted Fulton County Police Reform and Reinvention Plan. The plan enumerated five sheriff’s “goals and objectives for the future,” including DCJS accreditation.
The plan was the product of the Fulton County Police Reform Advisory Committee, which was formed after Gov. Andrew Cuomo last June 12 issued an executive order requiring local governments to adopt a police reform plan.

FULTON COUNTY Officials at the Fulton County Correctional Facility, which is shorthanded by an outbreak of COVID-19 cases, brought in reinforcements to deal with angry inmates Saturday.
Members of the county Road Patrol and state police helped corrections officers maintain control, county Sheriff Richard Giardino said Sunday.
The sheriff would only describe the incident as a disciplinary “situation” involving six to eight inmates of its maximum security unit.
Giardino said the inmates refused to comply with commands by corrections staff.
“We didn’t have enough staff available to take care of the unit and man the rest of the jail,” he said. “So we brought in road deputies and troopers as a force multiplier so that we could maintain the rest of the facility and concentrate on the problem at the same time. JOHNSTOWN The Fulton County Board of Supervisors will review three Fulton-Montgomery Community College matters at its meeting at 1 p.m. Monday at the County Office Building.
A resolution is on the agenda to appoint a trustee to the FMCC Board of Trustees.
Supervisors will consider a resolution to authorize advertisement for bids for the FMCC Financial Technology Lab Project. The project is part of Fulton County’s 2021 capital plan.
The board will also consider setting a public hearing to amend a local law to delete a provision that required FMCC land to be used for student housing.
