WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. In the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, as governments issued lockdown orders and stay-at-home advisories, grocery store shelves went bare. Shoppers scooped up flour and yeast, canned goods, frozen vegetables, meats and any other staples that they were concerned could run out before they got the chance to return to the stores.
With few exceptions, there were no real concerns about food shortages in the United States, said Jayson Lusk, distinguished professor and head of Purdue’s Department of Agricultural Economics. However, there was no easy way for consumers or policymakers to know that since data that could be used to calculate the risk to the country’s food supply is spread piecemeal across multiple government agencies like the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research is awarding a $221,700 grant to Purdue University to research food supply chain disruptions. The grants allow for the creation of open-access online dashboards that help quantify and illustrate potential disruptions to the food supply chain. The dashboards will focus on COVID-19 but have the flexibility to be tailored to suit future market disruptions. Microsoft is providing matching funds for a $506,700 total investment, in addition to supplying cloud technology, business intelligence, artificial intelligence and machine learning tools. FFAR Executive Director Sally Rockey says the effort will provide policymakers “with the information needed to prevent bottlenecks and ensure food security.” The dashboards, organizers say, will improve public understanding of the origins of food and provide critical information for enhanced policy and industry-level decision making. WHEAT RESEARCH: Hotter and drier weather threatens global wheat supplies. A $5 million grant from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research will help the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center to develop climate-resilient wheat and help reduce losses from heat and drought like the damage shown here. Wheat is a mainstay of the human diet; climate change threatens supplies.

Wheat constitutes 20% of all calories and protein consumed, making it a cornerstone of the human diet, according to the United Nations. However, hotter and drier weather, driven by a changing climate, threatens the global wheat supply.
To address this threat, the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research awarded a $5 million grant to the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center to develop climate-resilient wheat. The center leads global research programs on maize and wheat, sustainable crop systems and policies to improve farme
