The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia announced today that it has hired Mary Bauer to succeed Executive Director Claire Guthrie Gastañaga, who announced her retirement in October after nine years with the organization.
“We are thrilled to have Mary join the ACLU of Virginia team,” said Stephen M. Levinson, president of the ACLU of Virginia Board of Directors. “Mary is an experienced executive director, and has served in multiple roles during her career, including legal director, advocacy director and professor. She has deep roots in the Commonwealth that will serve us well.”

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Charlottesville Human Rights Commission met virtually on Thursday evening to discuss its needs. At the top of the list: hiring a leader.
The commission was very clear in its message to City Council. In order to have an impact on the community it serves, they need to hire a director.
“If we don’t get it soon, I don’t see how we can do much of anything real,” said Sue Lewis, a member of the 12-person commission.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Charlottesville Human Rights Commission Thursday night approved a memo to city council recommending several amendments to the human rights ordinance.
Those amendments are aimed at better addressing complaints of discrimination.
This comes after concerns raised by the public, as well as recent changes to the Virginia Humans Rights Act and the Virginia Fair Housing Law.
Those who spoke during public comment agree that employment discrimination needs to be addressed.
