We don t often think of Dover as a racing mecca, but in fact, for a period of about 60 years Dover was a well-known and popular destination for racing fans - involving a variety of means of transport - starting with horses in the late 1800s.
For a number of years the land behind and to the northeast of what is now Portland Glass, approximately 160 acres (most of which is actually in Somersworth), was owned by the Strafford County Agricultural Society. There was a racetrack and harness races were held along with various exhibitions and events. But in 1896 the property was sold to Frank Christie of Dover as a front man for Frank Jones, the extremely wealthy brewer of ales from Portsmouth. Jones, who had started out as the son of a farmer in Barrington, was not only a successful brewer, but builder and owner of the Rockingham Hotel and Wentworth by the Sea, mayor of Portsmouth, a U.S. congressman and, among other things, president of the Portsmouth & Dover Railroad.
