Montana Temple Plans Revealed As Smithfield Still Awaits Word From Church

By Charles McCollum & The Herald Journal • 4 hours ago As speculation about a new church temple in Smithfield continues to swirl, the city’s mayor this week said the municipality has yet to be contacted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Summer Citizen Program Resuming With High Expectations

By Charles McCollum & The Herald Journal • 4 hours ago In a sign that life is returning to something like “normal” in Cache Valley, Utah State University has decided to resume its Summer Citizen program, and early indications are there will be plenty of Arizona sunbirds flocking in to partake. “We’re not totally sure we’ll be full, but we’re expecting close to that. We’re already filling up the spaces we have available,” USU spokeswoman Amanda DeRito said this week.   The popular program which provides apartments at USU and local housing complexes in conjunction with a lineup of special classes and programs was cancelled last year at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. But this year the university decided the activities could be resumed relatively safely, especially with most seniors now vaccinated.

Rossier and LAUSD partner up to make change

The driving force behind the program comes from the need to increase both men of color in teaching positions and women in STEM fields and increase representation within schools in predominantly Black communities. (Charles McCollum | Daily Trojan) In February, the USC Rossier School of Education announced a teaching residency program in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District to increase diversity in teaching and retain teachers with a better understanding of their communities. Margo Pensavalle, a professor at Rossier and head of the team organizing the residency initiative, said the program is one of three of Dean Pedro Noguera’s initiatives; the other two initiatives address the emotional needs of students and work to improve civic engagement.
