The Bidwell houses at Gallop Road

6 07 2021 Two beautiful conservation houses, Atbara and Inverturret at No 5 and No 7 Gallop Road, grace the newly opened Singapore Botanic GardensGallop Extension. Both wonderfully repurposed, Atbara as the Forest Discovery Centre and Inverturret as the Botanical Art Gallery, they are among the oldest and finest surviving examples of residential properties that English architect Regent Alfred John (R A J) Bidwell designed in Singapore. Bidwell, who had an eventful but short two-year stint in the Selangor Public Works Department (PWD) as Chief Draughtsman and assistant to Government Architect A C Norman, came across to Singapore in 1895 to join pre-eminent architectural firm Swan and Maclaren. In a matter of four years, he became a partner in the firm; an arrangement that lasted until 1907. Bidwell would continue his association with the firm as an employee until 1912. On March 9, 1882, a San Diego newspaper ad read “La Jolla for sale,” according to “This Day in San Diego History” by Linda Pequegnat. “This famous resort, with nearly 400 acres of land and all the caves, is offered for sale at such a price that the buyer can realize a great profit by a little judicious outlay in such improvements that will attract the public,” the ad stated. “The owner resides East and wishes to dispose of it soon.”

BWW Review: TWENTIETH CENTURY at ARTS Theatre

At last, a Therry Dramatic Society matinee in the Arts Theatre, as the Twentieth Century steams into Adelaide via Chicago and New York, an arrival long-awaited since the production was closed down by the pandemic only hours before opening last year. Worth the wait? Certainly. The production, directed by Kerrin White, moves smoothly, as indeed does the set. Ken Ludwig, a remarkably successful purveyor of theatrical fun, has taken the 1934 Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur film directed by Howard Hawkes (thanks IMDB), added a few jokes, and has brought to life the farcical happenings on board the night train to the Big Apple.
