Dr. Daniel Ellsberg was roughly five minutes into responding to a student’s question on wargaming nuclear conflict with the Soviet Union when the time for his answer ran out.
That was a fairly common occurrence. The famed whistleblower had at age 40 leaked the Pentagon Papers, top-secret documents on the Vietnam War. Now, he had been given a time limit on his comments by Christian Appy, a renowned professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It wasn’t that Ellsberg would ramble off-topic. It was that for every question, he simply had so much to say.

Report for the World announced today the selection of six journalists for its 2021-2022 reporting corps. Three corps members will join the staff at TheCable in Nigeria and three will join Scroll.in in India.
The selected journalists for TheCable are Taiwo Adebulu, head, fact-Check desk; Vivian Chime, climate change reporter, and Ayodele Oluwafemi, criminal justice reporter.
The corps members for Scroll.in are Aarefa Johari, covering work and gender; Ishan Kukreti, land and climate, and Johanna Deeksha, health and education.

Inspired by Daniel Ellsberg’s vast collection of personal papers, recently acquired by University of Massachusetts Special Collections and University Archives, this free online conference brings together more than two dozen distinguished historians, journalists, activists, whistleblowers, and former policymakers on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Ellsberg’s leak of the Pentagon Papers. In a keynote address by Daniel Ellsberg and seven roundtable discussions, presenters will explore the major issues that have engaged Ellsberg’s life: the Vietnam War, nuclear weapons, antiwar resistance, the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, whistleblowing, and the wars of the 21st century.
