He woke to alarms blaring and made his way downstairs to find his store in ruins. “They damaged a lot of stuff. There was glass everywhere. Shelves had been knocked over and our stock was damaged on the floor,” he said. “I was not happy.” Mander checked the security cameras and said the trio, who had their faces covered and were wearing gloves, were in and out of the store within four minutes. He is still counting costs, but believes to have lost close to $10,000 worth of product, $7,000 of which were cigarettes and tobacco. The shop has been cleaned and remains open, although part of the building is temporarily boarded up.

Changes have been made for New Year’s Eve at a popular North Taranaki beach hotspot. To make Urenui Domain safer for all holidaymakers, police and the Urenui Liaison Committee have decided no formal celebrations will be held at the seaside venue, Sergeant Ross Wright said. There will be a 24-hour liquor ban in place at the Domain starting at 6am on December 31 and a manned road closure at the entrance.
