Rewards of photography

Article content Meaghan Kent is now an established local, full-time lifestyle photographer, six years after getting into photography as a hobby. Originally, she took photos as a way of improving her travel blog, The North Junction. “I had strong, written posts that were performing well online and getting great exposure, but I didn’t have strong, powerful photos to match the writing,” Kent told Sault This Week. “So after I bought my first DSLR in 2015, I turned to YouTube to learn how to use that camera. By July of 2016, I launched Meaghan Kent Photography because my then full-time job was falling on uncertain times and I needed a backup in case I lost my job.”

Games to fight hunger

Article content St. Vincent Place has a new fundraising event aimed at bringing family and friends together in a COVID-safe way while raising donations for the organization. Billed as the Fight Hunger Games 2.0, the event will have two parts that participants can get involved in. The first will be a game-a-thon, in which teams will collect pledges for committing to playing any game for a set amount of time. The second part will be a virtual Fortnite tournament. “We had a Fight Hunger Games event in spring of 2019, but it was much different than this, which is why this one is ‘2.0,’” said Nat Cicchelli, St. Vincent Place general manager. “This version will be fully COVID-safe so that it can go on uninterrupted regardless of whether or not we are in the middle of a lockdown when the event actually happens.”

Kensington Conservancy eyes new members, new preserves

Article content The Kensington Conservancy, a Desbarats-based charitable land trust, recently named Carter Dorscht its new executive director, replacing outgoing director Tanna Elliott. Dorscht had been working with the conservancy since graduating from Sault College’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Technician program in 2015. He started as land stewardship co-ordinator, then became a program leader, and took over as chair for the Conservancy’s Sustain Algoma Expo. From there he moved up to program manager. Dorscht told Sault This Week his college education boosted his pre-existing interest in the environment, but working at the conservancy helped lead to a strong passion for the conservation side of things.

Community First s new CFO encourages women to speak up

Article content Community First Credit Union earlier this year named local woman Lara Stilin as its youngest ever Chief Financial Officer. Effective Jan. 18, Stilin, 32, moved into the CFO role. Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU), Community First’s parent organization, said in a media release on March 8 the position will allow Stilin to “be a strong role model for women in the organization, as well in the communities YNCU serves across the province.” “I truly respect and support this mission of YNCU/Community First,” Stilin told Sault This Week. “I’m thrilled to be part of it in any capacity. In terms of being the youngest CFO, I’m pleased to see more diversity in executive teams. I think it helps when we see examples of ourselves in leadership roles. It helps have the confidence to pursue them.”
