Vietnam veteran and Glendale resident Alfred Taitano woke up on the morning of March 16 to accept his grand prize after winning the Military Star âYour Holiday Bill is on Us Sweepstakesâ at the Luke Air Force Base Exchange.
A small group of service members and participants gathered for the ceremony as Taitano was presented with the grand prize in the form of an oversized check for a $2,500 Military Star statement balance.Â
Before he received his prize, Taitano said it was an exciting moment and a great surprise. He added that he and his family are âvery grateful.â
The Army & Air Force Exchange service exclusively awards this âMilitary Starâ card to service members and their families. It allows recipients to build credit responsibly. The line of credit can be used at military exchanges and commissaries regardless of where the military members serve.
Missy Yedesko hopes the procession lifted the spirits of people in the community. We were trying to keep it low. It was a secret, hush, hush, but little by little if one knew, the other knew, and they told someone and told a friend, but it s something, said Yedesko of Pittston. I think people will be a little sad because they can t be out here to participate but happy that the committee is still moving forward and doing something, said Mary Kroptavich, the Main Street Manager for the City of Pittston.
Parade committee members and a few members of the Wyoming Valley Pipe and Drum Band and the Emerald Isle Step Dancers were part of the event.
