Many in Kenora think addictions and mental health issues are driving crime in the city if responses to a recent survey conducted by the local Ontario Provincial Police detachment stand to reason.
But the executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s local branch said that’s just not true.

“I just want to reiterate that mental health issues are not what’s driving crime, there’s no correlation in regards to violence, etc.,” Sara Dias said during a Feb. 3 virtual news conference.

A recent funding announcement will allow the Kenora branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association to hire another crisis mobile worker.
On Dec. 11, Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford announced $244,097 in funds to CMHA Kenora, which will allow them to add a crisis worker in the Kenora/Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls area.

In October, the CMHA and Ontario Provincial Police announced a partnership to bring a mental health nurse on calls. During the month of November, the program served 24 people and diverted 15 people from the hospital. The mobile crisis unit attended 32 calls in total and had 17 calls result in a hospital visit.
