Mask wearing in schools

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Education Currently we have the situation occurring in Tasmania whereby a group of around 14,000 people who have arrived from Victoria between 8 July and 15 July, for what we expect to be a relatively short period of time, are required to wear masks while in public and in work settings. The Public Health advice is that a person in that group poses a relatively low risk to the broader community or in their work environment, when wearing a mask and strictly practising COVID safe behaviours. The Tasmanian Government recognises that in schools and educational settings this can be a more challenging policy to implement. So that parents and schools can plan appropriately, any staff or student in a Government school or college affected by the mask wearing requirement should not attend school until Thursday 22 July, but must continue to wear a mask, limit their movements in the community and follow the public health advice.

Palawa leaders urge Tas government to keep 4WD tracks closed

Aboriginal leaders are urging the Tasmanian government to rule out reopening 4WD tracks on culturally significant land in the state s rugged northwest. A cultural assessment report found a proposal to allow off-road vehicles on three tracks in the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area does not minimise risk to Aboriginal heritage sites.  The tracks, which contain middens thousands of years old plus stone artefacts, were closed in 2012. The Liberal government pledged to reopen them during the 2014 election campaign and had a legal challenge against the closure dismissed in the Federal Court two years later. This report . I think it will kill the idea that these areas should be subjected to 4WDs. The government doesn t really have anywhere to go,  Aboriginal Land Council chairman Michael Mansell told AAP.

Supporting students, families and schools with Professional Support Staff

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Education Recruitment has commenced today for school psychologists, social workers and speech and language pathologists to support the work of our Child and Family Learning Centre as part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s $3.82 million First 100 Day election commitment. The new staff will support Tasmanian families and students at every stage of their development and learning, and are designed to replicate the Support and Wellbeing team model currently in government schools. Expanding the support in Child and Family Learning Centres will build on the variety of critical services already delivered to families and young children experiencing vulnerability and disadvantage.
