GRAND LEDGE - A set of recommendations from a 23-member committee focused on addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion at Grand Ledge Public Schools will likely be considered by school officials sometime in August, said Sara Clark Pierson, Board of Education president.
The district s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee was created last June less than a month after Brian Metcalf, the district s former superintendent, posted Facebook comments blaming George Floyd for his own death at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis. Metcalf s comments prompted current and former students to come forward and relay their own experiences with racism in the school district. Metcalf was fired last fall.

Board members voted unanimously to make Davenport the district s next leader during a meeting Wednesday night. He is currently the superintendent of Beecher Community Schools north of Flint.
Davenport was picked from a group of three finalists, including Hazel Park School District Superintendent Amy Kruppe and Steven Gabriel, Grand Ledge Public Schools assistant superintendent of human resources and operations.
Each trustee expressed difficulty picking between the three candidates. But Davenport s infectious energy made him stand out to Board of Education President Sara Clark Pierson.
“Sometimes it’s the tone at the top that makes all the difference and he has an undeniable fire, she said.
