CLEVELAND, Ohio MLB has been asked to delay the start of spring training in Arizona by Cactus League and government officials in the cities that host the 15 teams that call the desert home because of the surging coronavirus. Camps were expected to open on Feb. 17.
MLB Players Association, however, expects camps and the regular season to open on time because they’ve been assured of that by MLB.

Pitchers and catchers are set to report in just over three weeks and 15 teams train in Arizona, where just under 7,000 COVID-19 cases are reported each day.

The Cactus League and Arizona community leaders have asked Major League Baseball to delay the start of spring training due to coronavirus concerns just over three weeks before pitchers and catchers are supposed to report.
The Cactus League made the request in a letter to Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred obtained by The Associated Press on Monday. The letter was co-signed by the mayors of Mesa, Scottsdale, Surprise, Glendale, Goodyear and Peoria, as well as representatives from Phoenix and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
