Microsoft OneDrive is receiving an update (v6.29.1) for its Android app that will allow users to cast media to compatible Chromecast and other casting devices. In February, Microsoft introduced an update that saw it get a new home screen, playback support for Samsung Motion Photos and 8K videos. Also, Microsoft has released a 64-bit version for OneDrive allowing users to transfer large files and also multiple files at a time.

Sometimes it seems like every Microsoft 365 blog post is outlining new features for businesses, but that s not the case today. Today, the company outlined new features that are available for individuals and families. To be clear, most of this is already available.
For example, the first item on the list is Office for iPadOS, which shipped in February. If you re unfamiliar with Microsoft s unified Office app for mobile, it s basically the company coming full circle on its mobile plans, backtracking from having separate Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps. Interestingly, while the iPad was the first to get the individual apps, it s among the last to get the unified app.

OneDrive app update brings support for Samsung Motion Photos
Samsung and Microsoft have been collaborating over the past few years for various projects. Microsoft’s Your Phone app-related features almost always debut on Samsung phones, and the two companies recently announced Samsung Reminders sync with Microsoft To-Do. Microsoft has now announced that it is bringing Samsung Motion Photos playback capability to its OneDrive app.
Samsung Motion Photos, short videos (with audio) captured alongside still images on Galaxy devices, can now be played back within the new OneDrive app for Android. The feature will only work on devices running Android 6.0 or above. The new version of OneDrive will also be able to playback 8K videos, a feature Samsung introduced last year with the Galaxy S20 series. While OneDrive always allowed storing 8K videos and Samsung Motion Photos, the app is only now receiving the ability to playback those files.

Microsoft is updating its OneDrive app for Android this week with a new home screen, Samsung Motion Photos support, and the ability to play 8K videos. The new home screen includes quick access to recent files, offline files, and the “On This Day” feature of OneDrive that reminds you of your old photos.
Samsung Motion Photos support is also included in this update, allowing owners of Samsung phones to play back photos captured with motion in the OneDrive app or online. These photos work like Apple’s Live Photos and capture a still image alongside several seconds of video and sound before the capture. Microsoft says Samsung Motion Photos playback is rolling out worldwide and will require Android version 6 or above.
