Syracuse women’s lacrosse offense struggles in 9-4 win over Virginia Tech in ACC tournament opener

SU’s eight goals were the least the Orange scored in a win this season.
The Orange traveled to North Carolina just four days after a 16-7 win against Boston College in the regular-season finale. Meaghan Tyrrell opened the game’s scoring, which has been a trend this season. She has scored the first goal in four games this season, and Syracuse has gone on to win three of those contests.
Tyrrell finished Wednesday’s game with two goals and two assists, including her 50th goal of the season. She picked up her 30th assist of the season on her younger sister Emma Tyrrell’s first goal of the evening and added another on an Emma Ward score. Emma Tyrrell and Sam Swart each scored two goals in the win.

Throughout the entire season, head coach Gary Gait has shortened Syracuse’s pregame warmups at away games, arriving late to make sure that the team doesn’t lose focus by being on the field before the game for too long. But Wednesday, the pregame wait time was out of the team’s control.
Duke and Notre Dame combined for 33 goals in the game prior to Syracuse’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament matchup with No. 7-seed Virginia Tech. The Orange had to wait an entire hour before taking the field. Gait said this had a major impact on the team, especially the attack, which came out weak.
