The Orange again struggled in the first half against the Cavaliers.
Emma Ward scored the first goal of the game for Syracuse. She ran along the arch before sending a shot toward Virginia’s Charlie Campbell, and it bounced in off the post. But the celebration didn’t last long. The Cavaliers outscored the Orange 6-3 in the remainder of the half, including a goal on an open net.
Syracuse goalie Asa Goldstock is known throughout the conference as being risky, running the ball up field – sometimes past the 50-yard-line – to make offensive plays. For one of the first times all season, she was challenged while doing this. Morgan Schwab hit Goldstock’s pass out of mid-air, scooped it and beat Syracuse’s goalie to the net.

With the game tied at 11-11 and six minutes left in the game, Syracuse had yet to lead in the game. Sam Swart missed a shot, and the Cavaliers charged down the field in transition, something that the Orange struggled to defend against in previous games.
But Syracuse was prepared this time, putting defenders on the sprinting Virginia players right when they crossed the midfield line. Multiple SU defenders swarmed UVA’s Lillie Kloak, who lost control of the ball due to the number of sticks surrounding her.

Just when it looked like Syracuse had done enough to erase its four-goal deficit from early in the second half, Ashlyn McGovern launched a low shot that rippled the back of the Orange net, restoring a two-goal lead for Virginia.
Moments later, though, the Orange offense came to life and flipped the game for good. From behind the goal, Megan Carney fired a pass into traffic which landed in the stick of a Virginia defender. Midfielder Sierra Cockerille pressed the defender and tipped the ball back in the air, where sophomore Emma Tyrrell snagged it and dunked the ball into the net.

Down by two goals with less than nine minutes remaining, No. 3 Syracuse needed a spark. Meaghan Tyrrell and Megan Carney came calling.
Tyrrell had two of her team-high five goals and Carney added one goal and one assist from her five-point afternoon during a game-changing six-goal run as time ticked away in the second half, completely shifting the momentum and leading Syracuse to a 15-12 win at the Carrier Dome.
