OPPO and vivo, both smartphone brands from the Chinese behemoth B.B.K. Electronics, have wasted no time in releasing betas of Android 12, Google s mobile operating system that was announced at the search company s annual I/O event held on 18 May.
OPPO has its own skin, ColorOS, over Android, while vivo has a skin known as FuntouchOS. vivo s flagship iQOO 7 Legend is among its first devices to be able to run the Android 12 beta. OPPO launched the beta for its flagship X3 Find Pro.
As far as new features in Android 12 go, there is more compatibility with multimedia formats and support for more content insertion. The UI details have new functional bars and updated operating modes.

Telco Singtel Optus says it has switched on its first six 5G mmWave commercial sites in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane even as it reached a million 5G-capable devices on its network.
In a statement, Optus said the mmWave sites used the 800Mhz spectrum bandwidth, which meant much higher speeds though the telco will have to put in place more towers due to the shorter transmission.

Chipmaker Qualcomm Technologies has announced a new SoC, the 778G 5G, new reference designs to speed up 5G adoption across industry segments, and new features in its X65 5G Modem-RF systems that it claims will help expand 5G take-up across the globe.
The three announcements were made at the company s annual 5G summit, held online this year due to the ongoing pandemic.
The 778G is expected to be used in smartphones in the second quarter of 2021, the company said in a statement, adding that brands like Honor Huawei s former budget smartphone division which it sold last year iQoo, Motorola, OPPO, realme and Xiaomi would all be launching models based on the chip.

Media firm Nine Entertainment s real estate website, Domain, has been hit by a phishing attack just weeks after the parent company suffered a ransomware attack.
The real estate site has warned any of the site s users who try to inquire about rental properties through the site that an authorised third party could have access to their information.
iTWire understands that the phishing attack has had no effect on Nine, which owns 60% of Domain.
Domain chief executive Jason Pellegrino has warned users that personal information such as phone numbers and email addresses may have been obtained by those behind the phishing attack.

Expenditure on cloud infrastructure services in the US grew by 29% in the first quarter of this year to US$18.6 billion (A$23.9 billion), the technology analyst firm Canalys says, adding that this was a record.
The company
said total spend had grown by US$4.2 billion in 2020 and by US$621 million in the final quarter of 2020. Dollar for dollar, the annual growth was the highest in two years.
This increase was attributed in large part to the digital transformation that had been undertaken by many organisations as a result of the pandemic.
