In April last year, Irène Major gave birth to her eighth child. She was already homeschooling many of her seven other children, who had variously come back home to the family pile from university and boarding school a month earlier.
Holed up with husband Sam Malin, a Canadian-British oil and gas billionaire, in Ingress Abbey, their neo-gothic country house in Kent, it was a full-on experience. Ordinarily, Major would have had domestic help, particularly with the toddlers, but with the world in the grip of the pandemic’s first wave, the 41-year-old had sent her nannies home to be with their families in the Philippines.
