New Mexico has the second-highest fatal police shooting rate in US – is it ready to change?

Thu 6 May 2021 06.00 EDT Veronica Ajanel had not heard from her father for several days. Under normal circumstances she would have gone to visit him to check in, but this was late March 2020, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the New Mexico governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, had just implemented a shelter-in-place order for all of New Mexico. Ajanel was worried about her fathers health, so she called the Albuquerque police department (APD) to perform a welfare check on the 52-year-old Valente Acosta-Bustillos. APD had performed these check ins on Valente before. His family was routinely calling in for support as the Mexican native had been experiencing manic episodes.

Alex Bregman s charity efforts

Scroll By Brian McTaggart@brianmctaggart April 27, 2021 Nothing else matters to 8-year-old Brady Columbus when it’s Alex Bregman’s turn to bat. The toys he’s playing with can wait. The puzzles can be put together later. The world comes to a stop when Bregman steps into the batter’s box, which is when Brady darts in front of the television and plops down with his father on the couch to watch. Bregman, the Astros’ 27-year-old star third baseman, could hit a home run or strike out and Brady is going to cheer for him just the same. The results of the at-bat are of no consequence to him, though his father certainly has a bit more of a vested interest (more on that later). But once Bregman disappears from the TV screen, so does Brady.

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Federal Homeland Security agents knew Omar Cueva was an armed and dangerous career criminal on a drug run on Feb. 4. Heck, he was on his way to sell drugs to an undercover federal agent. What’s unclear is what State Police Officer Darian Jarrott knew about Cueva when he pulled him over along Interstate 10 in southern New Mexico that fateful day. A tort claim notice filed on behalf of Jarrott’s family claims Homeland Security agents sent an unsuspecting Jarrott to his death by not letting him know Cueva was dangerous. Indeed, it’s clear from the chilling video from Jarrott’s dashboard and lapel cameras that he had no idea he was walking into a deadly confrontation when he pulled over Cueva on Interstate 10 near Deming for having window tint that was too dark.
