Syracuse, N.Y. Syracuse freshman Kamilla Cardoso used every inch of her 6-foot-7 frame to make an impact in Sunday’s 81-69 win over Notre Dame most notably on defense.
It didn’t matter how or where Cardoso was positioned on the floor because the result ended with her swatting the ball away.
One hand. Two hands. At the rim or in the mid-range, Cardoso was there to contest.
Cardoso recorded a career-high nine blocks on Sunday and became the first Orange player with nine rejections in a decade, since Kayla Alexander accomplished the feat against Delaware State on Dec. 4, 2010.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Just when it was looking like it would be four wins in a row for the Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (8-6, 6-4), the North Carolina Tar Heels (8-5, 3-5) stormed back in the final minutes to escape with a 78-73 win. The Irish were up 70-63 with 4:36 remaining but did not record a field goal over the final 2:54 of the game.
Dara Mabrey poured in 23 points in today’s effort, including 14 in the second half. It marked her second 20+ point performance over the past three games. The junior connected on 5-of-10 from three-point range. Furthermore, Mabrey dished out a career high seven assists.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey instructed her squad to ‘continue to build.’ The Fighting Irish (7-5, 5-3) will look to do just that Thursday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Virginia Tech (7-5, 2-5). Tip is set for 7 p.m. EST inside Cassell Coliseum. The contest is a RSN (Regional Sports Networks) game, so please check your local listings. For those in the South Bend area, expect the game to be on the Marquee Network.
HISTORY WITH VIRGINIA TECH
Notre Dame leads the overall series, 12-2, with a 4-1 record in Blacksburg. The two sides last clashed on Dec. 17 at Notre Dame, where the Irish surged past for the 84-78 victory. Anaya Peoples shone bright in that matchup, scoring 13 of her 15 total points in the second half.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team is all about one phrase this weekend – revenge game. Boston College became the first ACC team to win three straight against the Irish in a series since joining the league. The last two have come down to the final seconds and that certainly sits on the mind of Karen & Kevin Keyes coach Niele Ivey.
The opportunity to right the wrong takes place this Sunday, on Jan. 17, at Noon EST. Fans can catch the action live on the ACC Network.
BOUNCE BACK ABILITY
So far this season, the Fighting Irish have shown resilience in bouncing back after a loss, avoiding back-to-back L’s. They are averaging 77.4 ppg in those instances, which is up from their 71.8 season average.
