Port of Seattle permanently bans use of facial recognition at Sea-Tac Airport
(Port of Seattle)
The Port of Seattle Commission voted Tuesday to enact a first-of-its-kind permanent ban on the use of facial recognition for law enforcement, security, and surveillance purposes.
The commission’s ban applies to the use of any biometric technology within Port of Seattle facilities, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Officially codifying a moratorium enacted in 2019, this marks the first port authority in the United States to employ restrictions on the use of biometric technology, and “the strongest by any government in state of Washington,” the Port said in a news release.

Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) is innovating with seamless, touchless travel to improve ease and wellness at the airport. Two pilot programs are testing ways to modernize the passenger experience with SEA Spot Saver, which explores digital reservations for the TSA general screening security checkpoints, and happyhover™, a technology deployed to airline check-in kiosks for travelers to check in and drop off luggage without touching the electronic screens.
“We can use technology to make the travel experience more streamlined and intuitive,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Sam Cho. “Touchless solutions reduce stress for those traveling today, but are the kind of innovations that will make the airport safer and more efficient for years to come.
